The news of the powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Morocco this weekend is a tragedy.

With more than 2000 people reportedly killed already, and hundreds more injured, we fear the death toll will rise with many trapped in rubble and in hard-to-reach areas of south Marrakech.

Mariam Mzoughi , Save the Children North Africa representative, said:

It’s heartbreaking to hear of the events of last night and we know that this disaster will pose significant threats to the safety of children and their families across the country.

We are currently monitoring the situation closely and reaching out to agencies on the ground to see what support may be possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected."
