Dr Tsitsi Chawatama-Kwambana is the chair of Save the Children UK's board of trustees, and a Consultant Paediatrician at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust.

Save the Children’s 2024 annual report is published today. The stories and projects featured in this year’s report highlight the scale and diversity of our work. I’m proud to reflect on the remarkable progress we’ve made over the past year. 2024 was a year of extraordinary challenges, but also one of courage, collaboration and impact. Together with our partners, supporters, volunteers and staff, we delivered change that matters—now and for the future.

We honour and remember colleagues who tragically lost their lives, and our thoughts are with their families.

2024 WAS A TURBULENT YEAR

In many places around the world, children were subjected to the horror and brutality of conflict. Worldwide, millions of children faced hunger, disease and denial of their rights. Our staff and partners worked tirelessly to support children in the toughest situations. And we amplified their voices, leading calls for change to policies and practices that affect them.

WE WORKED HARD TO REACH THE MOST MARGINALISED AND DISCRIMINATED AGAINST CHILDREN

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Myanmar, Kenya and Nigeria, we worked with international and local partners to bring education, health and nutrition services to children whose needs were not being met. Our work to ensure children in Sierra Leone are better protected from child marriage and other forms of abuse bore important fruits (page 20 of the Annual Report).

In the UK, we stood by parents who are trying to give their children the best start in life in difficult circumstances. We worked with communities to create opportunities for children to learn through play. And we made sure parents’ and children’s voices were heard when the UK and devolved governments made key decisions about tackling child poverty.

OUR WORK WOULDN’T EXIST WITHOUT YOU

As we face some big challenges ahead, we know that together, we will rise to those challenges and hold true to our mission to bring immediate and lasting changes for children.
