Child Friendly Spaces

A safe space for children

What is a child-friendly space?

Child-friendly spaces are protected areas set up by our staff, together with members of the local community. They give children a safe space where they can play, learn, express themselves and socialise.

Most often, we create child-friendly spaces to support children in emergencies – for example during conflict or after a natural disaster.

These spaces are especially designed to meet the unique needs of children, many of whom have faced distressing experiences.

Each day, trained adults organise activities that are fun but also structured, to help restore a sense of normality and routine for children who have had their lives torn apart by disaster. Our teams also offer important psychosocial support.
