Responding to the UK Government announcing a pledge of £100 million to the 2026-2030 replenishment of the Global Partnership for Education , a significant reduction from the £430 million that the UK last pledged in the 2021, Chanju Mwanza, Senior Education Advocacy Adviser at Save the Children UK, said:
"The slashing of its contribution by 77% contradicts the new Government's stated approach to place partnerships and children at the heart of international cooperation. After years of devastating cuts to global education, the UK’s heavily reduced support for the Global Partnership for Education shatters its historic role as a champion for education worldwide.
"We understand the need to make scarce resources go further, and this can best be done through country-led partnerships that strengthen education systems, including against the growing threats of climate change. Lower-income countries have stepped up for this replenishment and committed scarce domestic resources to education, but richer governments, including the UK, have failed to match that ambition.
"Children around the world, including here in Britain, have told us time and time again that education is one of their highest priorities, so this pledge cannot be the final word. We are calling on the UK Government to urgently review its pledge and to commit further top-up funding for GPE across the current Spending Review period. Every child deserves quality education, and the UK should be standing alongside partners on the world stage to make that right a reality."
