What is the Save the Children Young People Climate Fund?
The link between the climate crisis and children’s lives has never been clearer to see, or more difficult to witness. In countries around the world including the UK, children from the poorest and most disadvantaged communities are being hit hardest. Save the Children is committed to doing all we can to tackle the climate crisis.
Following a successful pilot in 2023 and an iteration of the Fund in 2024, Save the Children UK is launching the 2025 Young People Climate Fund to provide small grants to directly support climate focused activities in London, West Yorkshire and West Midlands, supported by corporate partner, QBE.
The Climate Fund aims to raise awareness of the impacts of the climate crisis, and its effects on children and young people in the UK and around the world. The Climate Fund will also provide opportunities for young people and children to actively participate in the design and organisation of positive climate activities to address the issues that matter most to them.
We’ve collaborated with the Save the Children Climate Advisory Board (a small group of climate-engaged young people aged 12-18) to agree the grant criteria that will be used to select successful applicants and the Climate Advisory Board will be involved in choosing the climate activities that they want us to support via this Climate Fund.
What kind of projects could the Young People Climate Fund support?
In 2024, we supported Parliamentary receptions and roundtables, music videos, documentaries and skate jams as well as nature-themed workshops and community garden projects. In the past we have also supported activities such as climate education and 'Teach the Parent' events, poetry, art and theatre groups using the arts to educate others about the climate as well as community clean-up initiatives.
When planning your climate activity, we recommend you consider:
- Does your project directly involve young people (those under 18yo)?
- Does your project listen to or amplify the views of young people or empowers them to raise their voice
- Does your project create opportunities for young people to build skills by organising, presenting or leading the activities?
- How can you project create lasting change in your community?
- Who will be educated about climate change and environmental issues through your activity?
- Is your project focused on the impact of climate change in the UK/Europe or Worldwide (either approach are good but it might be worthwhile for you to consider your project aims)
How many projects will the Young People Climate Fund support?
We aim to support up to 12 organisations with grants of between £1,000-£3,500, split equally in London, West Yorkshire and West Midlands.
