Three (thousand) cheers for the London Marathon

Well, we’ve quite literally hit the ground running with this year’s marathons. Last Sunday the sun came out (phew) for what was a truly inspirational day at the Brighton Marathon. It’s always an amazing feeling when you first set eyes on the sea of runners each taking on this massive challenge (and lots of aches and pains) to raise money for so many fantastic causes.

Team Save the Children

We had a brilliant group of volunteers, including volunteers from our Save the Children shops in Portslade, Worthing and Hove and Brighton ready and raring to cheer. We were there bright and early, on the look-out for our Save the Children runners among the crowds. Armed with cowbells, maracas and kazoos, we were the loudest cheerers there and gave an extra special cheer every time we spotted someone in a Save the Children running vest.

After party

It was lovely to meet some of our runners in the ‘charity village’ after they had completed their mammoth challenge. The lovely people from Starbucks in Western road donated some goodie bags filled with some delicious treats for all our runners to enjoy – they were definitely very much deserved.

By the end of the day and lots of energetic cheering I felt like I’d run a marathon myself so I can’t imagine how our runners felt. So we want to say THANK YOU so much again for doing something amazing to make such a difference for children.

Now London’s turn!

But it doesn’t stop there. This weekend our Save the Children Cheering Squad will be in London to support all our runners in the London Marathon. This year we have more than 90 runners, our biggest team ever. Together they’re raising over £115,000 for our work, so we need to help them to keep on keep on keep on keep on moving!

Come join us

We’ll have two cheering points; the first at mile 9, in Surrey Quays, and the second at mile 25, on the Embankment. We’ll be at Surrey Quays from 9.30am and Embankment from 11am, so come on down and join our very loud and enthusiastic cheering squad – prizes go to the best rendition of theme Rocky theme tune on a kazoo.

We’ll also be joined by Cheerleaders from the London City Stars, who’ll be doing some amazing cheers and stunts to help keep the runners going. If this rain continues they’ll need your support even more – running in soggy shoes is never fun. So even if the skies open up, please come and cheer all the amazing runners with us – after all, in the year of the Queens jubilee, there couldn’t be a better time to show a good bit of British spirit.
