South Sudan: temporary school construction

I have just arrived in South Sudan for a short-term deployment as Construction Advisor. I am currently based in Maban County in Upper Nile State, which is located near the border with Sudan and Ethiopia.

Save the Children’s Emergency Team have been active here in Maban County since early 2012. They were one of the first NGOs to respond to the huge influx of refugees from Sudan and the resulting humanitarian crisis.

Save the Children is active in two of the major refugee camps in the area – Doro and Yusuf Batil. Both camps currently host in excess of 40,000 people. Children account for around 40% of the population.

Save the Children and its partners are working tirelessly to provide education and child protection facilities in the camps.

This includes the ongoing construction of around 120 classrooms and child-friendly spaces across the two camps. These basic structures provide an essential opportunity to learn and play in a safe and secure environment.

During my deployment, I will be working with the Save the Children construction team to upgrade and expand the existing facilities.

This is with a view to create the best learning environments possible with limited resources. We will work with the beneficiary community local government, partners and donors to develop the best strategy for 2013.
