It’s (Tea) Time for Action
Over 1300 people will be making their way to Westminster this morning to show their support for International Development.
I’m currently en route armed with cupcakes aplenty in the hope that today could be the day that big changes are promised! I will be meeting with my local MP, Simon Wright at 12.30 in Westminster Central Hall. Along with other supporters from my constituency I will be telling him my views on international development over that important cup of tea.
The phrases written on the top of the cupcakes next to me highlight the reason why today is so important: ‘Aid works’, ‘Transparency’ and ‘Innovative funding’. When I meet with Simon Wright I will be asking him to:
- ensure legislation on the aid budget is tabled before the end of the year and then passed
- write to George Osborne and ask him what he will do to support the adoption of strong EU legislation for corporate transparency
- write to the prime minister ahead of the G20 meeting in Cannes, asking him to ensure the UK puts pressure on the G20 to make all multinational companies report a basic set of accounts on a country by country basis and that he works with other European and G20 countries to deliver a tax on the financial sector
So the kettle is on and thousands of people are ready to tell our Government that it is time act! Westminster awaits!
