The next Scottish election is a huge opportunity to change the story on child poverty.

It’s an opportunity for politicians to deliver the real change that people want to see and to deliver a better future for all children.  There must be no limits to childhoods. Save the Children wants to see all politicians seize this opportunity and put children at the heart of the next election.

Right now, people across Scotland are fed up and feeling overlooked by politicians. A combination of insufficient social security, low-paid and insecure work and high costs of housing, food and childcare mean that families across Scotland are struggling. Heartbreaking evidence of this is that one in four childhoods is being held back by poverty. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Our Policy Positions

Our No Limits to Childhoods policy papers set out how the next Scottish Government can choose a different future for Scotland, and make sure every child has an equal chance to thrive.

What We're Calling For

We’re calling for all political parties to invest in a better future and commit to:

  • Reducing child poverty and setting out a credible path to meet the 2030 Child Poverty targets
  • A Babies Guarantee
    • Making sure every family with a new baby is financially secure by increasing Best Start Pregnancy & Baby Payment and Best Start Foods
    • Increase funding for early help family support services for babies, children and families
  • Making sure every family is supported where they need it, when they need it, and can access good quality community-based Whole Family Support
  • Investing in social security: Increasing the Scottish Child Payment
  • Changing the narrative about child poverty: Telling a better story about why we need to invest in children and invest in a better future for Scotland
