Statement: Save the Children responds to UK Government’s pledge of £80 million to Education Cannot Wait
Responding to the UK Government’s pledge of £80 million to Education Cannot Wait, Hollie Warren, Head of Education at Save the Children UK said:
“Today’s pledge will make a real difference to the futures of children living in the world’s worst humanitarian crises. But sadly it falls way short of the funding needed and is another sign of the impact of the UK’s aid cuts. The amount pledged is less than half of the £170 million called for to ensure children in crises get the educational support they need and deserve.
“Across the world, conflict, climate change and the aftermath of Covid-19 is disrupting the education of 222 million school-aged children. At a time when a record number of children are in need of urgent education support, the UK and other world leaders have fallen short.
“Now is not the time to turn our backs on them. The UK government must take urgent action to reverse its aid cuts to education and play a leading role in ensuring Education Cannot Wait is fully-funded.”
