1.5°C of global warming across a full year is another deafening siren in the fight for a planet that is liveable

London, 8th February - Responding to today’s news about the world’s first year-long breach of 1.5°C of warming, Carly Munnelly, Senior Development Financing Adviser at Save the Children, said:

“Breaching 1.5°C of global warming across a full year is another deafening siren in the fight for a planet that is liveable for generations to come.

“Children are listening. 70% of young people in the UK already tell us that they are worried about the world they will inherit.

“And we know that pitting prosperity against tackling the climate crisis is a false choice. Climate impacts have pushed up UK food bills by hundreds of pounds. Around the world families on the lowest incomes are already on the frontline of devastating floods and droughts.

“Yet today we see Labour undermining their green pledges. And the Government has rowed back on a string of environmental targets.

“The time for half measures is long past. Political leaders need to show children they will take bold action now. All of our futures depend on it.”
