UK's announcement on international finance system 'tinkering around the edges', Save the Children

New York, 19 September 2023 - Today at UNGA the UK announced measures it says will build a more inclusive international financial system and help achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

In response to the announcement Carly Munnelly, Senior Development Financing Adviser at Save the Children, said:

“The UK's ambitions to build bigger, better and fairer international financial system are laudable, but today's announcements are only tinkering around the edges. As 774 million children globally face the interconnected threat of the climate crisis and poverty, the UK needs to raise the bar by supporting genuinely transformative reforms”

“Legislating to incentivise the private sector to participate in debt relief, supporting the creation of a UN Convention on Tax to make global tax decisions truly inclusive, equitable and transparent, and returning aid spending to 0.7% of GNI should be top of the agenda.”
