WALES: Statement in response to the Senedd Cymru election result

8 May 2026 Global

Bilingual statement / Datganiad dwyieithog

“Childhood only happens once and the new government must make tackling child poverty in Wales a priority”

Melanie Simmonds, head of Save the Children Cymru said: “Child poverty is an injustice seen and felt across Wales with one in three children going without basic daily essentials such as food and the opportunities to thrive. It is a scar on our society and impacting so many families through no fault of their own but also affecting us all.

“The scale of the problem demands bold choices by the new Welsh Government.  In particular we are calling for a Welsh Child Payment to provide additional support for low-income families.

“This must be delivered as part of a clear Welsh child poverty action plan with measurable targets to go alongside a child poverty strategy.

“Childhood only happens once and the new government must make tackling child poverty a priority. We are looking forward to working alongside newly elected members from all parties to deliver a better future for children.”

Notes to Editors

  • To see our full list of calls, see our 'Listen to Us More' manifesto, shaped by the voices of children, highlighting what Welsh Government must do to give children the future they deserve.
  • We are also currently developing research and policy work on the links between child poverty and the environment given that the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation affect the poorest and most vulnerable people most – both globally and here in Wales.

Datganiad mewn ymateb i ganlyniad etholiad Senedd Cymru

“Dim ond unwaith y mae plentyndod yn digwydd a rhaid i’r llywodraeth newydd flaenoriaethu mynd i'r afael â thlodi plant yng Nghymru”

Meddai Melanie Simmonds, Pennaeth Achub y Plant Cymru: “Mae tlodi plant yn anghyfiawnder a welir ac a deimlir ledled Cymru gydag un o bob tri phlentyn yn mynd heb anghenion sylfaenol fel bwyd a’r cyfleon i ffynnu . Mae’n graith ar ein cymdeithas ac yn effeithio ar gymaint o deuluoedd ac arnom ni i gyd.

“Mae graddfa y broblem yn mynnu penderfyniadau beiddgar gan y Llywodraeth newydd. Yn benodol, rydym yn galw am Daliad Plant Cymru i roi mwy o gymorth i deuluoedd ar incwm isel.

“Rhaid cyflawni hyn fel rhan o gynllun gweithredu clir ar dlodi plant gyda thargedau mesuradwy i gyd-fynd â strategaeth tlodi plant.

“Dim ond unwaith y mae plentyndod yn digwydd a rhaid i’r llywodraeth newydd flaenoriaethu mynd i'r afael â thlodi plant. Rydym yn edrych ymlaen at weithio gydag aelodau newydd etholedig o bob plaid i helpu i roi dyfodol gwell i bob un plentyn.”

  • Rydym hefyd wrthi'n datblygu ymchwil a gwaith polisi ar y cysylltiadau rhwng tlodi plant a'r amgylchedd o ystyried bod effeithiau newid hinsawdd a dirywiad amgylcheddol yn effeithio fwyaf ar y bobl  fwyaf bregus– yn fyd-eang ac yma yng Nghymru.
