Statement: African countries are spending three times more on debt repayments than education

14 Oct 2026

Callum Northcote, Head of Global Systems Reform at Save the Children UK:

“We welcome the Foreign Secretary’s leadership and focus on reforming the international finance system that leaves many lower-income countries hamstrung and unable to invest in vital services for children.

He is right to recognise that some African countries are spending three times more on debt repayments than education, disproportionately impacting children. We hope his ambitious rhetoric will now be met with tangible action. Reforming the G20 Common Framework on debt, including introducing legislation to ensure private creditors partake in restructuring, should  be a core priority.

The UK has an opportunity to use its G20 Presidency next year to show bold leadership by championing deeper, faster, and fairer relief from unsustainable debt, providing urgent and life-saving relief to millions of children.”
