What do we know about the Afghanistan Earthquake?
Another powerful earthquake has struck northern Afghanistan, forcing children and families to flee their homes in the middle of the night. This is the second major earthquake in two months, with at least 20 people reported dead and hundreds injured. Save the Children is responding with emergency health support in Samangan province.
The 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck in the early hours of Monday 3rd of November, with the epicentre in Samangan province, an hour from the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Severe shaking was also felt in the capital, Kabul, with tremors reported as far away as Pakistan. Families across northern Afghanistan are now facing freezing temperatures with homes destroyed or damaged.
This latest earthquake comes just two months after a 6.0 earth quake killed nearly 2,000 people in Eastern Afghanistan. The devastating earthquake destroyed or severely damaged more than 8,000 homes, with thousands of children and families now facing a freezing winter in tents, either in camps or close to the ruins of their homes
Children are homeless and scared – and the extent of the devastation is still unfolding.
“Children are gripped by fear as another powerful earthquake in Afghanistan forced them to flee their homes in the middle of the night. While the scale of the damage and destruction will take time to become clear, the impact on children’s mental health is immediate. ” says Samira Sayed Rahman from Save the Children Afghanistan.

How are we helping children and their families impacted by the Afghanistan Earthquake?
Children and their families need urgent support – with the destruction of so many homes, they will need food, clean water, shelter and essential household items.
Save the Children is deploying a mobile health team to Samangan and continues to provide:
We're sending health teams to treat children and their families in both Nangarhar and Kunar provinces
We’re providing clean, safe water for displaced families
We’ve got child protection teams on hand to take care of children at risk
We had vital resources ready – and now we’re set to get them to children. These include materials to build temporary shelters, education kits to keep children learning, and hygiene kits to keep families safe
We’ve been working in Afghanistan since 1976 to help children grow up safe, healthy and able to learn.
Children in Afghanistan face many challenges. The economic crisis, severe hunger, droughts, displacement and flooding have turned children’s lives upside down across the country.
Since August 2021, we've scaled up our response to support the increasing number of children in need. We deliver services spanning health, nutrition, education, child protection, shelter, water, sanitation, hygiene and livelihoods.

That way, we can respond the moment an emergency hits without having to raise money first. We can make sure families are better prepared to cope long before disaster strikes. We can help communities set up early warning systems, so they know an earthquake’s coming and can get to a safe place. And we can get supplies to children immediately because we already have our team prepped, ready to respond.
