Every two seconds, a baby is born. But not every birth is safe.

In conflict zones around the world, women are giving birth alone.

In 2024, we estimate 46 women every minute gave birth without a doctor, nurse or midwife present.

But, thanks to our supporters, we work to enable safe birth with trained midwives, Emergency Health Units and specialist birthing kits, as well as life-saving equipment and medicines.

Your donation could help more babies born into war and other children around the world.

Our Emergency Health Units

Our Emergency Health Units respond to disasters that wipe out entire communities, as well as forgotten crises where children’s suffering can go unnoticed. Services include life-saving maternal care, as well as vaccinations, mental health support and treatment for common diseases and malnutrition.

It's the very first of many ways that we help to create lasting change for and with children.

Lana, the first baby born at our Emergency Health Unit in Gaza

Meet Baby Lana

When Tima* found out she was pregnant in July 2023, she was excited to be having her second child and started to think about how she would spoil her new baby.

Then in October 2023, the war in Gaza started and everything changed.

Tima and her family were displaced multiple times. Tima was terrified where she would be able to give birth safely, given the continuous attacks on healthcare facilities during the war.

On 26 April 2024, baby Lana* became the first baby to be born at Save the Children’s new maternity unit in Gaza.

Since then, we have supported the delivery of more than 100 babies, like Lana, helping them survive against the odds.

The Emergency Health Unit has now handed over the maternity unit to national staff to continue this important work going forward. However, we’re continuing to provide essential healthcare services at our Primary Health Care Centre in Deir Al-Balah.

Your donation could help more babies born into war and other children around the world.

Why regular giving is so important for children in conflict

Every child deserves the right to a safe birth and the future they deserve. Regular gifts are the most effective way for us to plan for this.

Your donations mean we can deliver:

  • Mental health services to help children cope with trauma

  • Education through learning centres

  • Long-term medical care

  • Access to cash and food vouchers to empower families to choose how they support their children

  • Child-friendly spaces to give children a sense of normality

1 in 6 children globally are living in conflicts they did not create. Your monthly donation can help give them a better future.

Who are Save the Children UK?

Every child has a unique story. We help children rewrite theirs.

Save the Children fights for children every single day so they can fulfil their unique potential.

Month after month, in the UK and around the world, we make sure children stay safe, healthy and keep learning, so they can become who they want to be.

We could not do this without our supporters who give a donation every month.

Monthly donations allow us to plan for the long term. To be not just reactive, but proactive in thousands of projects across the world, all designed with one thing in mind: to improve the lives of children.

We know what needs to be done. To do it, we need you.
