Supporting children fighting to survive and rebuild their lives
Our Partnership with Clifford Chance: Driving Sustainable Change
Since 2010, Clifford Chance has been an essential partner for Save the Children, helping us respond to global emergencies when children need us most. Their support spans large-scale crises such as Ebola, the Syria conflict, and the Rohingya Refugee Crisis, as well as often-overlooked emergencies which do not often make the headlines in Yemen, Pakistan, and the Philippines.
Clifford Chance’s pro bono legal support has played a pivotal role in enabling Save the Children’s operations worldwide, including assisting in the procurement, equipping and the launch of a Search and Rescue Vessel to save the lives of children fleeing conflict, poverty, and persecution across the Mediterranean Sea.
Fostering Long-Term Impact: The Kumwe Hub Partnership
In 2022, Clifford Chance became the seed funder for the Kumwe Hub. This groundbreaking initiative aligns seamlessly with our mission to ensure that every child survives, learns, and is protected. Kumwe Hub, a social-enterprise model, supports local businesses and entrepreneurs, providing grants, concessional loans, and expert guidance to foster child-centred industries in Rwanda.
Kumwe, meaning "together" embodies the spirit of collaboration central to this programme, bringing together businesses, communities, and investors to build sustainable, impactful solutions for children and families.
As a key inaugural investor, Clifford Chance has been instrumental in catalysing the growth of Kumwe Hub. Their initial investment positioning the Hub for substantial expansion across 14 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. This ripple effect is empowering entrepreneurs with the skills and resources essential for long-term, sustainable business growth, creating a positive impact on children, youth, and families across the continent.
Kumwe Hub operates as a local impact innovation hub, a departure from traditional aid delivery models. This shift is driving sustainable development and empowering entrepreneurs - especially women leaders - to establish businesses that address critical needs in health, nutrition, and climate resilience.
Clifford Chance’s belief in entrepreneurial empowerment and community-led growth has laid strong groundwork for a more inclusive and child-centred future in Rwanda.
Climate Resilience in Sierra Leone
Clifford Chance’s commitment to sustainable development also extends to climate resilience. Through the Green Climate Fund (GCF) project in Sierra Leone, they’ve helped build adaptive capacities in coastal communities, benefiting 260,000 people and creating long-term solutions to protect families from climate change.
The Green Climate Fund is the world’s largest fund dedicated to helping developing countries address climate change by providing financial support for both mitigation and adaptation efforts. It is designed to help vulnerable communities and countries reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.
By partnering with the GCF, Clifford Chance has played a pivotal role in strengthening the resilience of coastal communities in Sierra Leone, ensuring they are better equipped to cope with rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and other climate impacts.
Business Entrepreneurship in Ukraine
In Ukraine, Clifford Chance’s support for The Possible alliance has helped 51 social enterprises thrive despite the ongoing crisis. Their funding has empowered businesses in sectors like rehabilitation and food production, supporting communities affected by the war. These enterprises provide jobs and offer vital services, contributing to the country's recovery and rebuilding.
A Legacy of Lasting Change
Clifford Chance’s partnership with Save the Children goes beyond immediate crisis response. Their visionary support helps us create sustainable development solutions that empower children, families, and communities. From humanitarian aid to entrepreneurship and climate resilience, their contributions are building a better future for vulnerable populations worldwide.
