Michael's bestselling book War Horse was turned into a hit Broadway and West End play, and a film by Stephen Spielberg.

As our Special Ambassador for Literature, Michael has spent time discussing child rights with children in Gaza.

In February 2011, he travelled with us to Gaza to assess the impact of the conflict on children living there. He spent time with children, discussing their rights and sharing stories and poems.

Michael said: "Stories are something that everyone, no matter where they come from or what language they speak, can understand and share."

When he returned, he delivered the BBC’s 2011 Dimbleby Lecture, Set Our Children Free. In it, he focused on children's rights and what he'd learnt during his trip to Gaza.
