Your generous donation can provide children and families affected by the Myanmar earthquake, as well as other disasters across the world, with life-saving essentials like food, water and crucial mental health support. It can also help create lasting change through longer term programmes to alleviate poverty and the chronic impact of climate change.
What's happening in Myanmar
Two months ago, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday 28th March, with tremors causing destruction elsewhere in the region.
It is one of the strongest earthquake to hit Myanmar in a century, and has hit areas home to over 17 million people.
Thousands of children and families are homeless and have nothing. They urgently need food, water and shelter.
More than 3,500 people have died and 5,000 more injured – many are children. These figures are only likely to rise, as many remain missing.
The monsoon season is around the corner with weather warnings for heavy rains and storms. This extreme weather will not only hamper recovery efforts for families already struggling to rebuild their lives, but also risks displacing even more people, with flooding and strong winds threatening to rip down flimsy makeshift shelters.
Our teams are moving quickly to ensure children and their families can get the urgent support they need.
Please donate to help children in Myanmar and around the world, wherever the need is greatest.
What we're doing to help children
With the support of our incredible supporters, Save the Children has been able to reach more than 106,000 people in Myanmar, including over 32,000 children.
Our teams are moving quickly to respond to the emergency – but it's crucial that the international community also acts now to provide support to the thousands of people in need.
We have been working alongside local partners to help us scale up our response further and ensure children, and their families can get the support they need to mitigate the worst impacts of this disaster.
Working with local partner organisations, we’ll:
- Distributing essential emergency household kits and shelters for displaced families living in open spaces.
- Providing cash assistance to families so they can buy food, medicine and other essentials.
- Providing access to clean water, essential hygiene and sanitation items and health services.
- Providing psychological support to children and their caregivers to help them overcome the traumatic experience they've been through.
By donating, you can make sure Save the Children is exactly where we need to be to stand with children in crisis and to create lasting change.
Children's desperation, in their own words
Children are uniquely vulnerable at a time like this. Some are separated from their families or are traumatised by loss. They have been through the most terrifying experience.
"I just ran. I barely escaped," says Yoon May*, earthquake survivor in Myanmar, age 16. "The moment I stepped outside, bricks started falling from the ceiling. We all ran to the open field near our house."
"I haven’t been able to sleep at all. We have no water, no electricity."
We are in a race against time.
