How we helped Bisharo*

Bisharo, 12, stands outside her home in the Degehabur district, Somali Region, Ethiopia.

“I dream that I can study.” - Bisharo 12.

Bisharo’s mum Rukia lost 6 children, who were all aged just one year or under when they died from preventable diseases such as pneumonia.

Living in an isolated community in eastern Ethiopia, without roads and healthcare, meant that Rukia was forced to carry her children by foot for hours to seek treatment when they fell ill.

Now her children are fully immunised and Rukia advocates for fellow mothers to have their children vaccinated. “Now the problems are decreasing,” she says.

“It was good to see my daughter survive,” Rukia says. “I felt happy to see her recover. Bisharo means success.”
