Compassion crosses borders. It’s something felt between people who may never meet, never touch hands, and yet it could change the course of their lives. Like being given shelter, food, and warmth during the worst days of your life, compassion is felt immediately - but it can last decades.

Right now, millions of children are caught up in wars they had no part in starting. But you could make sure children in conflict can keep safe, healthy, and learning - so that one day they can build a better future for themselves and their countries.

Your compassion creates safe spaces

When their lives have been turned upside down, when everything familiar is gone, our safe spaces are somewhere children can come to feel normal again. They’re places to learn, play games, draw, meet new friends. To feel like children again. To get the support they need to begin working towards the future they deserve.

By donating today, you can make sure more children get that chance.

“The [Save the Children workers] play and chat with us. I’ve been taught life skills. Before, I didn’t feel good. Now, I am very happy. I’m not afraid anymore.”

What happens at our safe spaces?

Children learn and grow through play

Play

Children learn and grow through play. It’s how they come to understand the world and the people around them. It’s crucial to forming social connections and doing well in education. Our safe spaces help children escape the chaos around them and give them the chance to play and have fun with their friends.

Our safe spaces keep children learning

Learn

One of the first casualties of a crisis is children’s education. Being out of school robs kids of a sense of normality and safety. It puts their chance of a future at risk. Our safe spaces keep children learning – about everything from literacy to handicrafts to girls’ rights – so when it’s time to go back to the classroom they’re ready.

In our safe spaces, children can get support to help them

Recover

Many children who’ve escaped war and disaster suffer from severe emotional distress. In our safe spaces, children can get support to help them come to terms with their experiences. And it’s a place where our staff can spot the most deeply traumatised children and refer them to specialist mental health services.

200 million children live in warzones

After his family fled Syria, 14-year-old Siraj* had to work long hours picking vegetables to support his family, making it impossible for him to concentrate on his studies. But at our safe space in his refugee camp, he got his education back on track. Now he has high hopes for the future. “This is what I’m thinking: I finish my studies, get a diploma, maybe become a teacher or a doctor. Then Syria goes back to what it was, and we all return, and I get a job there. …”

"…I will have a house. And get married. And live a good life."

How do we help children in conflict?

As soon as it’s possible, we support families with life-saving basics like food, water, shelter, and medicine.

We set up safe spaces where kids can play, learn, and just be kids.

We give children mental health support to help them recover from the things they’ve seen and refer them to specialist counsellors.

We set up temporary schools to keep children learning - so one day they can build a better future for themselves and their countries.

And we’ll never stop pushing world leaders to do more to protect children in war. Campaign with us.
