Indonesia Tsunami Appeal: How You've Helped

Donate to our emergency appeal

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake has devastated lives in Cianjur, Indonesia on 21st November 2022. Help us reach children quickly.

A tsunami was triggered by a powerful earthquake in Sulawesi, Indonesia, at the end of September 2018, leaving a trail of destruction.

Over 2,000 people were killed and thousands more injured. Those who survived had their lives ripped apart. Six-metre-high waves flattened whole coastal towns, wiping out thousands of homes and schools.

With homes, water supplies and vital infrastructure shattered, thousands of families were exposed to the elements, left without clean water and put at heightened risk of disease.

Thanks to your incredible generosity, in those critical first few days we gained access to Sulawesi and reached almost 6,500 people with life-saving support.

Our teams provided families with vital healthcare, shelter, water and hygiene supplies. We've set up clinics, erected temporary schools and provided shelter. We reached 189,466 people, roughly half of them children. You made this vital work possible.

WHAT WE DID

The disaster forced tens of thousands of children from their homes and cut many off from the food and safe water they needed to survive. But thanks to your support, we:

  • distributed over 16,000 shelter kits containing blankets, tarpaulin and ropes,
  • distributed over 17,000 mosquito nets to keep children safe from malaria,
  • gave over 700 families fresh food vouchers.

Living in temporary shelters and deprived of decent sanitation, children and pregnant women were especially vulnerable to disease. But thanks to your support, we:

• distributed over 11,000 hygiene kits to families, containing essentials like soap, buckets and jerry cans,

• reached over 107,099 people with clean water kits

• built hundreds of emergency latrines to help tackle the spread of deadly diseases,

• trained 150 community health workers to reach vulnerable women and children,

• supported over 1,000 mums with feeding practices for young children during an emergency,

• given pregnant and lactating women baby blankets, baby bath soap and flannels.

  • We’re identifying children who have been separated from their families and helping to reunite them. Children like seven-year-old Rizky*, who was separated from his family after the destruction.
  • We’ve set up safe places where children can recover, play, and receive emotional support to overcome this traumatic experience.

Learning is often one of the first casualties in an emergency - it's also one of the most important things to restore as quickly as possible. Thanks to your support, we:

  • set up temporary learning centres to get over 2,000 children who are out of school back into education,
  • trained teachers to deliver psychosocial first aid and recognise children who need referring for specialist support,
  • repaired damaged school buildings,
  • distributed over 1,500 back-to-school kits containing pens, pencils and notebooks.
