Published by Countdown to 2015, this report is a collaborative effort to highlight progress, obstacles and solutions to achieving Millennium Development Goals 4 (child survival) and 5 (maternal health).

It contains country profiles on the 68 countries with the highest levels of maternal and child mortality, which account for 97% of maternal and child deaths.

Data is taken mainly from national surveys and global databases. For each country the report measures:

  • coverage of basic health services that are proven to reduce maternal and child mortality
  • the strength of health systems
  • the status of policies related to maternal, newborn and child health 
  • how equitably health services are distributed.
