Orphan Care Evaluation: Mchinji District, Malawi

This report evaluates Save the Children's work with the Gandali village orphan care committee between 1996 and 1998. It makes use of focus groups and individual interviews, secondary literature and statistical information to describe the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in relation to articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It examines existing local support mechanisms, analyses the impact of particular interventions, eg, a borehole, communal garden and pre-school, and offers recommendations for future orphan care work.
