The Household Economy Approach: A resource manual for practitioners
This manual describes the Household Economy Approach, which is a method of analysing the impact of crop failure and other shocks on household income and access to food.
June, 2000

Developed by Save the Children, the Household Economy Approach - or HEA - enables rural and development workers to:
build up a picture of the economy of a defined population using rapid field methods
analyse the relationship between a shock - for example, crop failure or a rise in the price of a staple food - and the ability of households to obtain food and oterh essential items.
As well as being used by Save the Children, the HEA has been widely adopted by governments and the UN.
This manual explains what is meant by household economy, looks at how field workers can get information about households, and how to use it to forecaset likely outcomes. It serves as both an introduction fo rfield workers to the HEA and a reference for those who have expperience of this approach.
