How will Universal Credit affect poor families?

This briefing argues that the potential positive impact of Universal Credit – the new welfare system due to replace tax credits and most benefits from 2013 – on supporting parents into work and reducing child poverty could be undermined. It identifies three key issues:

  • insufficient earnings disregards for working mothers
  • lack of support for childcare costs
  • Universal Credit payments will be withdrawn too quickly.
