Pearson

Helping child refugees

In March 2015, Pearson, the world’s learning company, joined forces with us to launch an innovative new partnership, called 'Every Child Learning'.

Our three-year partnership, worth £1.5 million, will increase educational opportunities for Syrian refugees. It aims to develop innovative new education solutions that can be adapted, scaled up and replicated in other emergency contexts.

In 2016, Pearson funded a project by photographer Patrick Willocq.

To date, Pearson has invested £1.5 million across three pillars of activities in the Every Child Learning partnership:

  1. Programme funding to meet immediate needs of children affected by the Syria Crisis in Jordan,
  2. Research and development of new solutions, and
  3. Advocacy and sponsorship to raise awareness of the urgency around improving education for children in emergency and conflict-affected settings globally.

At the end of 2016, Pearson committed to doubling their investment for an additional three years, to support the pilot of the second pillar.

Helping children in Jordan

To kickstart the partnership, Pearson will invested £500,000 over two years to support our work in Jordan, This money will helping to create learning environments that promote quality education, protection, life skills and wellbeing for thousands of 1,400 children aged 5-13.

The project will be implemented at centres in two communities in Amman with the highest refugee population and greatest need.

Our education centres will create a stimulating and safe environment for children and their parents where they can access psychosocial support, as well as taking part in structured learning activities. They will also help children gain the skills and knowledge they need to integrate into the Jordanian education system.

Justine Greening, former UK International Development Secretary, said in 2015: “Four years of conflict have left Syria’s children scarred, homeless and at risk of becoming a lost generation without a future.

"That’s why education is at the heart of Britain’s package of essential support to thousands of Syrian families, whose children will be called on to rebuild their shattered country.

"The Every Child Learning initiative from Pearson and Save the Children is a very significant and welcome contribution to these efforts.”

Expertise in education

Over the course of the partnership, Pearson and Save the Children are combining their respective expertise to research and develop transformative programmatic and digital solutions to improve education for children in emergency and conflict affected settings.

This phase of the partnership began in September 2017, with a pilot education project in Jordan designed to improve education for Syrian refugee and host community children, aged between 9-12 in grades 4-6.

The ambition is that these solutions can then be adapted, scaled and replicated in other emergency and conflict-affected contexts around the world.

Advocating for education in emergencies

We are working together to raise awareness of the urgency around improving education for children affected or displaced by emergencies.

In 2016, Pearson funded a project by photographer Patrick Willocq to highlight child refugees' experiences and to tell the stories of children living in camps in Lebanon and Tanzania. We wanted to remind world leaders that a generation of children are being denied their right to education, to protection, to the very basics of life – and it’s time this changed.

In March 2017, Pearson joined forces with Save the Children and UNHCR for the Promising Practices in refugee education initiative, designed to source, identify, document and promote existing innovative practices, which if scaled up could help close the education gap for refugees around the world.
