BBC Cymru Wales weather forecaster Derek Brockway and former S4C weather-presenter Jenny Ogwen are calling on everyone to organise a tea party or fun event to raise funds to save a child’s life, come rain or shine.
Wednesday 15 April 2009
Save the Children week, to be held between 26 April and 2 May 2009, will raise funds towards our largest-ever campaign to show how simple it is to save a child’s life.
"Throw a tea party or a coffee morning and ask your guests to make a donation or charge a fair price for the tea and cakes on offer, then send the proceeds to Save the Children. How easy could it be?,” said former S4C weather-girl and TV and radio presenter, Jenny Ogwen. She is a valued supporter of Save the Children in Wales for many years and an active member of the Women in Wales committee who organise Wales’ biggest fundraiser, the Women in Wales Lunch.
“Vaccinations, antibiotics and mosquito nets are all simple things that can keep a child alive", Ogwen said. "And it’s simple to raise the money needed to buy those life saving items.”
This year marks the 90th anniversary of Save the Children. 10 million children die before their fifth birthday every year. That’s as many as one child per three seconds. In the worst countries, like Sierra Leone in Africa, the rates of survival are so drastically low that one in four children do not make the age of five. The shocking reality behind these figures is that most of these children are dying of causes that are treatable such as malaria, diarrhoea and pneumonia. Simple things such as rehydration salts and mosquito nets – items that cost just a few pounds – would keep these children alive.
Derek Brockway BBC Cymru Wales weather forecaster added: “Go on, go absolutely ‘Tea-potty’ for a good cause at the end of this month. Saving a child’s life is as simple as having a cup of tea with friends, family and colleagues or it could involve fun events such as afternoon tea, a garden party, a Gin & Tonic party or, for your keen golfers out there, a Tee party! We may not be able to guarantee the weather, but what is certain is that all your efforts will go towards saving a child’s life.”
