Save the Children's campaign to cut drastically the numbers of children who die before reaching their fifth birthday received a global boost with backing from 'The Elders'
Monday 31 March 2008
"This is a fantastic boost to Save the Children's new campaign. The Elders are reminding the world that every human has rights - and they have spoken out for the rights of the youngest. There can be no greater priority in the world than ensuring children have the chance of life. Now families across the world can join such distinguished figures as Desmond Tutu and Kofi Annan to challenge this injustice and help save children's lives," said Jasmine Whitbread, Save the Children UK's Chief Executive.

The Elders group came together late in 2007 through the inspiration of Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel, and under the chairmanship of Desmond Tutu.
Graça Machel, international advocate for women's and children's rights said: "Keeping children alive is a global responsibility and priority. This campaign is driving action around the world to make sure that the promises made to children across the world are kept."
Archbishop Desmond Tutu said: "There is nothing more precious than the life of a child. This is where we find hope for the future. I encourage people around the world to make their voices heard and back this campaign."
Saving children's lives
10 million children die every year before their fifth birthday. But we know, together, it's possible to stop this injustice. We just have to act. We want 10 million people to take action by 2010 for the 10 million children. Be one of them. Make sure the very poorest children aren't left to die.
