Despite EDF Energy and British Gas announcing price cuts, thousands of British children will still be left in the cold.
Thursday 12 January 2012
This week, EDF Energy and British Gas both announced a five per cent drop in their energy prices.
Cuts are not enough
"Energy price drops will be welcome news for families struggling to keep their homes warm," said Justin Forsyth, Save the Children CEO.
"But for children living in poverty, a five per cent decrease doesn’t go far enough. We need to see targeted help for them."

Children left in the cold
"Energy companies have not funded the government’s fuel bill discount scheme properly, meaning just 25,000 families will get help with their bills when 800,000 should," said Forsyth.
"They need to put the millions needed into the Warm Homes Discount scheme now – that's the best way to make sure children don't pay the price for high energy bills."
What we're calling for
We're urging energy companies to make sure the poorest families get the cheaper tariffs. It’s not right that poorer families often pay more for their energy because they can’t get the best deals.
The government must do more to help families insulate their homes and make them more energy efficient, reducing bills so they can afford to keep warm.
