Nanday's new baby boy
A new life
Nanday gave birth to a healthy baby boy on the 18 of May 2005. A week later she named him Francis.
Healthy weight
He weighed 3.6 kg and was born at 10.10am assisted by Kroo Bay midwife Bintu and Mariatu, a traditional birth attendant.
New rules for traditional birth attendants
Nanday had gone to Mariatu when she started feeling pain and Mariatu brought her to the clinic. Mariatu explains 'we have a new rule in the community that we must bring mother's to the clinic to deliver the baby. So when a mother comes to me I take her to the clinic. It’s better to deliver in the clinic because the nurses can direct us and look for problems. The delivery room is much bigger and better now, and if there is any problems the Community Health Officer is living upstairs and can come and stop the bleeding.'
