What we’re doing
We've been working hard with the people of Kroo Bay to make big changes for the better. Families here already have a healthier future but there's still so much more to do.
The story so far
Dirty rubbish still flows down the Crocodile River from the city, and there’s no plumbing here so children wash, play and go to the toilet in the same river. When floods ravage the community the filthy water washes into homes, spreading deadly disease.
With your help we’ve:
- renovated the rundown clinic, providing vital medicine and equipment
- started clearing and banking the Crocodile river to stop it flooding, giving residents the tools they need to keep on banking each rainy season
- built a walkway across the river so people don’t have to wade through the filthy water
- trained 270 Blue Flag Volunteers to identify and treat cases of diarrhoea
- provided four large bins so the community can safely dispose of rubbish, and led a campign with residents to get the government to stop people dumping waste in the river
- set up a children’s health club so children can better look after their own health.

There’s more work to do
Help save even more children’s lives
Despite making progress, Kroo Bay’s children are still dying needlessly of ilnesses we know how to treat or prevent - things like diarrhoea and pnuemonia. The situation here is a microcosm of a global disgrace - 8 million children under five die each year around the world. We have the power to stop this if we work together - join our No Child Born to Die campaign today.
We campaigned - and thanks to a government decision in April 2010, 1.5 million children and their mothers in Sierra Leone will now have access to free healthcare.
