Nanday, mother
About me
My name is Nanday
I'm in my thirties but I don’t know my exact age. I came to Kroo Bay after the war in 1999 to find my mother. I found her here and I stayed. My videos
My children
I gave birth to five children but I lost two. My eldest son is Foday and he's 17 years old. My second child is Sonia and she's 15. She is a twin but her sister died when she was six months old. My fourth child was a boy, he was called Ali. He died when he was thirteen months old. My last child is clled Kadiatu. She is now two years and two months old.
Foday is dumb so I don’t know what he will do with his life. Sonia goes to school. She's in class five. I hope that her education will mean she'll be fine in the future. I hope for a better future for my children.
My work
I sell coal to make a living. I usually earn between 1000 and 2000 Leones (£0.20 and £0.30) in one day. On a good day my children and I can earn up to 7000 Leones (£1.16).
During the rains
In the dry season we survive in Kroo Bay. But during the rainy season it's hard. The place is cold, the river floods and we get sick.
What makes me happy
My favourite part of the day is when my children and I go to bed and we wake up together. I'm happy to see that everybody is fine in the morning.
