Bintu, maternal and child health nurse
About me
My job
I am one of the maternal and child health nurses at the clinic. I’m the main person who takes care of the deliveries. I’ve been working here since 2004, although at times I’ve been assigned to other hospitals too. I’m always on duty because I live in Kroo Bay myself.
The joy of childbirth
I love my job. I’m so happy when I deliver a healthy baby. But it’s difficult to work in the clinic because we don’t have all the supplies we need.
The difficulties we face as nurses
When the women come to the clinic to give birth they come with nothing. I have to buy soap, gloves and other essentials. If they have money I ask them to buy some drugs in case there are any complications such as bleeding during the delivery.
The ill-equipped delivery room
The delivery room is not a pleasant room to give birth. It’s more like a store. We don’t have any bed sheets and we have to use the same things again and again.
My family
I’ve lived in Kroo Bay since 1996 when I came because of the rebels during the war. I have six children - four girls and two boys. Only two of them still live with me. My little granddaughter also lives with me. We don’t make much money and I’m trying to renovate a house that I will rent, so at the moment I need money!

I am studying to be a midwife in London, England and can only image how difficult things must be. Yet, I can also appreciate that you probably love what you do and I am sure everyone who passes through your doors is grateful. I would love to hear more about your way of working!
Thank you very much. Serving the course of humanity is OK with me.
