Bintu, maternal and child health nurse
About me
My job
I am one of the maternal and child health nurses at the clinic. I’m the main person who takes care of the deliveries. I’ve been working here since 2004, although at times I’ve been assigned to other hospitals too. I’m always on duty because I live in Kroo Bay myself.
The joy of childbirth
I love my job. I’m so happy when I deliver a healthy baby. But it’s difficult to work in the clinic because we don’t have all the supplies we need.
The difficulties we face as nurses
When the women come to the clinic to give birth they come with nothing. I have to buy soap, gloves and other essentials. If they have money I ask them to buy some drugs in case there are any complications such as bleeding during the delivery.
The ill-equipped delivery room
The delivery room is not a pleasant room to give birth. It’s more like a store. We don’t have any bed sheets and we have to use the same things again and again.
My family
I’ve lived in Kroo Bay since 1996 when I came because of the rebels during the war. I have six children - four girls and two boys. Only two of them still live with me. My little granddaughter also lives with me. We don’t make much money and I’m trying to renovate a house that I will rent, so at the moment I need money!

I am studying to be a midwife in London, England and can only image how difficult things must be. Yet, I can also appreciate that you probably love what you do and I am sure everyone who passes through your doors is grateful. I would love to hear more about your way of working!
Thank you very much. Serving the course of humanity is OK with me.

Medical equipment
Hi Bintu,
I would like to send equipment to your clinic.
Could you let me know how if this is possible?
Could you let me know what things you need?
I already have some equipment ready to send, all I need is someone who can pick it up, and an address to send it too.
Regards,
Andrew
Thank you for offering to send equipment. As you\'ve seen from the webisodes the clinic is being renovated and there will be many things we\'ll be needing to get it up and running.
We\'ve had many people offer to send items that will improve the health clinic here in Kroo Bay. Unfortunately because of the complicated procedures for customs clearance here in Sierra Leone, we are unable to accept these kind offers.
However, there are many other ways in which you can help. If you want to support Kroo Bay directly, the best way to do it is to donate through the site and this will help us buy things locally that are needed for children that come to the clinic, such as mosquito nets, vaccinations and rehydration salts.
Thank you for visiting our Kroo Bay website and remember you can sign in to our newsletter to receive updates on the clinic renovations and on our lives in general.
Kind Regards,
The Kroo Bay Team

I am a midwife from the UK coming to Freetown in May for 3 weeks to work with a midwife in Wellington. Her name is Mary and she works at the Bobson Memorial Health Centre - do you know her? I have been to Freetown twice before so know something of the hardships you face.
You are welcome in Freetown. Please visit Kroobay before you leave for England.
