Elizabeth, grandmother
About me
My large family
I am married to Alikali. He is the stepfather of my children and he brought the children up. There are eight of us living in my house, including five of my grandchildren.
My videos
I love having my grandchildren around. Two of them are Martha's children - my daughter who died. The children help me with my grief. I lost Martha, but seeing the children helps me to feel better.
The children make me happy
Caring for so many grandchildren is a problem. We don’t have much money for food or clothes, and finding school fees is especially hard. The youngest is in Form 2 and it's difficult to find the money for her uniform, shoes and books. But I like having the children around me. They make me feel happy.
To make money, we do some market trading and my husband works as a carpenter. Whenever someone needs a carpenter for their house, they may call him.
I say thanks to God for my long life and for the fact that most of my children have grown up and are fine. I am happy with my husband. We have no quarrels or problems and we are bringing the children up together, even though they are not his. He was very sad when Martha died.
Water problems
Kroo Bay has lots of problems, particularly water and a lack of toilets. Sometimes there is no water in the taps and we have to wait till 1 o’clock in the morning for the water to arrive. That's really a strain on us. Then there is the flooding. During the rainy season the rain comes right into the house - it reaches up to my knees! When this happens we make sure the children are sleeping high enough above the ground and we spend the night scooping out the water. I am really worried now because the rainy season is approaching again.

HI
I am so sorry to hear that your daughter died.
My grandma looks after me sometimes. I have tea at her house, I live in Manchester/ Oldham and my grandma doesn't live very far away from me.
I am actually going out to watch a movie with my granma today as I have just got back from my holiday and she wants to see me.

You are a brave woman, your grandchildren are very lucky to have you. God bless.
I have just read about you and your family. I am sure that there is lots more to tell and I would like to hear more. I am from Scotland. Apart from having my own 'small' family of two grown up boys, one a musician with no money and the other with a degree (been to university) but still has no job. All the same we support one another and love each other very much. I have experience of living in a muslim society and within a country at war, I know what its like to have no water and electricity and under threat of being killed or threatened by extremists that could hurt you just because your beliefs aren't the same as theirs. Since those war torn days I have since become a trained nurse, also done a midwifery course and worked with small babies, children, mums and with families. I love working within the community and amongst people. In the meantime I am going to do what I can. I'm going to start by getting the knitting needles out. Thinking of you.
Thank you and god bless. I will think of you and please don\'t forget to think of me and this community.
