About me

Adama G, 29, Community Health Officer at Kroo Bay clinic

I started my job here in October 2007. When I first arrived I was a bit worried when I saw the community and the environment here. It's extremely difficult to run an efficient clinic here in Kroo Bay.

State of the clinic

In the clinic we don’t even have the equipment we need for minor surgery. And the clinic is dirty - we have to clean the dust away several times a day, and often the place smells awful. The toilet facilities are very poor and there are cracks all over the building.

Biggest health challenges

The biggest health problems for children in this community are diarrhoea, respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and coughs, worm infestation as well as malaria.

Most people deliver their babies at home, we encourage them to come to the clinic, but they don’t. Then if anything goes wrong during delivery they rush to bring them to the clinic. We don't have a delivery kit at the clinic; the nurse brings her own personal one for deliveries. We can't steralise anything here and we have nothing to dress wounds with.

Meeting the communities needs

I'm newly educated . At college we learnt that a community health officer is trained to meet the communities health needs. I am very excited to be working in this community.
