South East Asia crisis: What you helped us achieve
Typhoon Ketsana caused widespread destruction in the Philippines and Vietnam in late September 2009. Days later an earthquake hit Sumatra, Indonesia. Our emergency appeal for South East Asia raised an astounding £513,672.
Eliswarni’s home was destroyed by the earthquake – our hygiene kit and plastic tent helped her family stay dry.
In September 2009 Vietnam and the Philippines were hit by powerful Typhoon Ketsana. It caused the biggest floods Vietnam has experienced in decades. The storm was one of the worst recorded in the Philippines – inundating the country’s capital, Manila, with heavy rains. More than 400 deaths were reported due to landslides and flooding. Hundreds of thousands fled their homes, with thousands losing everything they owned.
Days later, a powerful earthquake hit Sumatra, Indonesia – located along the 'Pacific ring of fire.' Thousands were trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings and entire villages were sucked under the earth after the devastating earthquake triggered landslides in western Sumatra.
We spent £181, 000 from our Children’s Emergency Fund, which allows us to respond immediately to a crisis, and launched our appeal. Through your generosity we raised £513,672.
What we did with your support
- We provided almost 300,000 children and their families with hygiene supplies and materials to build temporary shelters or repair houses.
- We fed 27,000 children and their families with emergency food rations
- We got 31,000 children back to school
- We provided 3,100 children with safe areas where they could play with their friends.
Even though this appeal has closed, you can help us reach other children in emergencies by supporting our Children’s Emergency Fund.
Thank you.
