Wales programme: Child poverty
More than 160,000 children in Wales live in families where every decision is tough. Do you buy food or clothes? Settle a bill or pay for a school trip?
Poverty harms children and affects their life chances. Poor children can expect fewer qualifications, lower-paid jobs, more health problems, and shorter lives than other children.
We believe the needs of the poorest children in Wales must be urgently addressed so they can afford basic necessities and benefit from the same opportunities as other children.
While we applaud the UK government's commitment to eliminating child poverty by 2020, we think it will fail to meet this target until it has a strategy for helping the poorest children. We are calling on the Chancellor to put provide greater resources for the poorest children in the UK, including seasonal grants to support families over winter and summer - the two most expensive points of the year for parents.
