Northern Ireland: Tackling poverty
More than a third of children live in poverty - that's 170,000 children.
Families are struggling to afford basic things like proper food and heating. We think this is unacceptable. It's also preventable. That's why we are calling for government action to eradicate child poverty in Northern Ireland.
How we are doing it
- researching how severe poverty affects children
- asking young people about their experiences of living in poor households
- working with children and young people from poor areas and supporting them to campaign and lobby for change
- using our research findings and expertise to advise the government on the best ways of tackling child poverty.
Our achievements
- publishing the first annual report on the State of Child Poverty in Northern Ireland (PDF 1,540KB)
- highlighting the shocking situation of children living in the most severe poverty in our report, The Bottom Line (PDF 737KB)
- co-publishing, with the Office of the First and Deputy First Minster (OFMDFM) and Queens University Belfast, the report Child and Family Poverty in Northern Ireland (PDF 586KB). This report sets out for the first time baseline statistics against which government can set targets to end child poverty in Northern Ireland
- making recommendations which have helped to make child poverty a key issue in the government's priorities and plans
- gathering pledges of support from all the main political parties in the North of Ireland for our campaign to get the UK government to introduce seasonal grants for families on a low income.
