What’s it all about?

More than 9 million children die every year before their fifth birthday. Most of these children die from illnesses that we can prevent or treat easily — for example, diarrhoea, malaria and malnutrition.

In 2000, world governments committed themselves to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). MDG 4 calls for the under-5 mortality rate to be cut by two-thirds by 2015. But progress is slow — on current trends, this goal won’t be met until 2045. We must change this — and we need your help to do it.

This key stage 3 pack gives you the information you need to tell your pupils about the issues and add their voices to our campaign to save children’s lives. It will also support your teaching.

The pack has two schemes of work:

  • four lesson plans for English for speaking, listening and literacy lessons
  • six lesson plans for Citizenship.

The lesson plans are straightforward and don’t involve much photocopying, cutting out, laminating, etc. The lessons themselves have lots of photos, videos and activities to encourage pupils’ engagement.

We’ve also included ideas for an assembly about saving children’s lives.

These resources have been produced by Save the Children and TeachFirst.
