Not Another One, Not Another Day: AU-EU Summit, Lisbon, 2007 Briefing
"We cannot waste our precious children. Not another one, not another day." Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel
December 2007
9.7 million children die every year. 4.8 million - half - of these are in Africa, even though it's home to just one tenth of the world's population.
This briefing looks at how African governments, despite commitments in 2001 and 2005, still aren't spending enough on health. It also shows that the EU is failing to support the development of health systems in Africa, with most member states still falling short of their commitment to spend 0.7% of their gross national income on aid. It includes a list of recommendations to get the AU and EU back on track to meet the Millennium Development Goals.
