This book is about children’s rights and the attempts of one primary headteacher to support a school and community in embracing an ethos based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

It goes beyond the usual approaches to children’s rights, such as pupil councils, and looks for imaginative ways to enhance children’s participation.

We are aspiring, by sharing the experiences of one school, to provide inspiration and insight into new possibilities. We hope this book will be read by everyone who is interested in schools and children’s place within them - headteachers, teachers, other adults in schools, school board members or governorsand parents - and will encourage questioning of some practices that are taken for granted.

Change, as this book will reveal, does not always happen at the ‘top’ or the ‘centre’ but can be initiated from almost anywhere.
