Future Scots: Pre-five services for asylum seekers and refugees in Glasgow
This study examines the types of childcare available to asylum-seekers and refugees in Glasgow.
February 2006
This study examines the types of childcare for children under five available to asylum seekers and refugees across the spectrum of communal provision.
Interviews and focus groups were held with 36 parents living in Glasgow, 12 staff and managers of Pre Five facilities, four staff from voluntary organisations that provide regular crèche facilities and nine key stakeholders who deliver services to asylum seekers and refugees.
The main aims of the study were to:
- note the attitudes of asylum seeker families towards Pre Five provision
- highlight the restrictions in accessing Pre Five services for asylum seeker families
- ascertain if there are identifiable gaps in provision
- explore whether the service is appropriate to the needs of asylum seeker/refugee parents and their children
Proposals regarding how support could be developed and/or improved to address the findings are presented in the recommendations
