This report provides an incisive snapshot of the needs of children and young people who experience domestic violence in rural areas in the UK. It addresses two distinct gaps in domestic violence research and service provision:

  • Services targeted specifically at children and young people. Children and young people were directly consulted about what they think are the gaps in provision, based on their personal experiences.
  • What is distinctive about services in rural areas for children and young people who experience domestic violence.

This research was commissioned by The Countryside Agency and Save the Children, and carried out by researchers from Liverpool University. Drawing on interviews with children, parents and professionals, it identifies a number of key issues, including:

  • refuge provision
  • education
  • housing
  • health and welfare
  • friends
  • issues faced by teenage boys. The report makes detailed recommendations for improvements in both policy and practice.

This report will be of relevance to policy-makers and practitioners in health, social services, housing, youth work and education, working in both rural and urban settings.
