Join our ‘Mother of All Tweets’
Mother’s Day on March 12 is meant to be a moment of celebration. But a mother-to-be dies every minute somewhere around the world. Join our ‘Mother of all tweets’ twitter campaign and get global leaders to sit up and do something about this tragedy.
Wednesday 3 March 2010
For many mothers in the developing world, what should be the happiest day of their lives ends in tragedy. Every minute of every day a mother-to-be from somewhere around the world dies simply because they don’t have access to the vital healthcare they need before and during childbirth.
Babies need their mothers. We know that without them, children are far more likely to die before they reach even their first birthday. But tragically, in countries such as Sierra Leone, one mother in eight dies in childbirth, leaving thousands of babies without their mothers’ love and care.
Global leaders have promised to improve maternal health and help save children's lives, but the figures still don't add up.

Amanda Mealing and Marie Claire back our campaign
"Twitter is such a great way for the public to speak out on issues they are passionate about, and this gets politicians listening,” said Actress Amanda Mealing, who has visited Save the Children's work in Sierra Leone. Mealing, who is fronting the Mother of All Tweets said: “I've seen first hand the devastating effect a mother's death has on the family she leaves behind. This shouldn't still happen, and doesn't have to.”
Marie Claire is also backing our campaign.
Tweets can be sent at any time during the two week tweet campaign from 1 March to 12 March. The last day of the campaign will coincide with a Minute for Mothers. This event will see mothers, celebrities and politicians come together in central London with members of the White Ribbon Alliance.
