Save the Children roadshow - Participation across the nation
Students across Wales will be greeted by a giant inflatable octopus as part of Save the Children’s Participation Unit Roadshow which will visit various colleges around Wales over the coming weeks.
Friday 29 August 2008
The Roadshow will be raising awareness of the work of Save the Children and the Participation Unit — part of a consortium of organisations and charities in Wales — which works to support and increase children and young people’s participation in decision-making on all matters that affect their lives, such as policy making, education, public transport and leisure.
The Roadshow will visit seven colleges around Wales between 1—19 September. Students will be invited to take part in fun activities and workshops, including an introduction to Save the Children youth campaigns and the National Children and Young People’s Participation Standards. These have been created in partnership with children and young people, and allow children to inspect work carried out by adults to see if it meets their standards in terms of sharing information, listening to their ideas and making sure they get something out of the experience.
Anna Skeels, Participation Unit Manager at Save the Children Wales said: “Participation is all about involving children and young people in decision-making by encouraging them to stand up for their right to be heard and ensuring that adults recognise the genuine role they can play in improving our communities.
“In partnership with various colleges across Wales we are hoping to raise awareness of the work that we carry out at the Participation Unit and the ways that the young people themselves can get involved by becoming a young trainer, gaining work experience, becoming a millennium volunteer and fundraising.
“By involving the students in fun activities which includes a 15ft giant inflatable octopus and various workshops we hope to reach over 2,500 young people over the coming weeks.”
The Participation Unit Roadshow will visit the following venues between 10am — 3pm:
- 1 September - Coleg Sir Gâr / Carmarthenshire College (Llanelli Campus)
