Mark Knowles, Save the Children’s Retail Manager for Cumbria, said:
“This is a hugely exciting venture for Save the Children in Cumbria. The area is famed for its links with literature and poetry and we feel it is the perfect base for Save the Children’s first ever book shop and first ever coffee bar in the UK”.
Recently opened, the charity is appealing for volunteers to help with a variety of roles including pricing books, creating eye-catching window displays and even trainee baristas.
Knowles added: “Volunteers from all walks of life are encouraged to get in touch and we’re always hugely grateful for whatever time they can give, even if it’s an hour a week. Our shifts are flexible to suit volunteers and the work is from finding treasures amongst the donations and even promoting our wider campaigns to customers. It’s a great opportunity for someone to develop their skills in retail.
“We are also incredibly grateful for any donations of unwanted books, music or film. Most people tend not to read books twice and rather than have them sitting on shelves gathering dust, you could be passing them onto someone who will enjoy them just as much, whilst raising much-needed funds to save children’s lives”.
Sally Barker, Save the Children’s Shop Leader in Penrith said:
“The success of Save the Children’s existing shop on Middlegate, which is about to celebrate its 30th birthday, spurred the decision to open our second shop in Penrith. We’re so excited about the combined book and coffee bar and we think it will go down brilliantly with the locals — you never know, we might even find some original Wordsworth or Beatrix Potter amongst the donations!”
