Add Save the Children to your Fairtrade shopping list

As Fairtrade Fortnight launches, why not try Save the Children's delicious coffee and chocolate

Monday 25 February 2008

This Fairtrade Fortnight - 25 February to 9 March - help some of the world's poorest children while having your cup of coffee or snacking on a chocolate bar.

FAIR INSTANT coffee - which is uniquely partnered with Save the Children - is already making a real difference for children in coffee-growing countries like Colombia.

20p from every 100g FAIR INSTANT jar, sold in all major supermarkets, goes to Save the Chidren.

And in the past year, FAIR INSTANT has raised £100,000, directly helping more than 1,000 children and indirectly supporting 2,500 children who otherwise wouldn't get an education.

Take six-year-old Cristhian in Montenegro, west Colombia. Cristhian used to be barred from school because of a physical disability, but he now gets support from a specially-trained teacher thanks in part to funding from FAIR INSTANT.

The FAIR INSTANT partnership has also:

  • provided more than 540 uniforms and gym kits
  • given lunches to more than 850 children
  • trained almost 200 teachers
  • helped more than 100 children attend sports and leisure activities
  • helped set up small mobile libraries and play areas.

Sweet taste of success

Organic, fairtrade and delicious, CHOCAID chocolates make a specified donation from every sale to Save the Children's work with malnourished children in Ethiopia.

For example, the 100g chocolate bar - available in Tesco Stores across the country - costs £1.59, and 10p of that goes straight to Save the Children.

CHOCAID is a family business, owned and run by young husband and wife team David and Stephanie Wilson, who've sold their own home to finance the brand.

"Ethical shopping is a hassle free and painless way for us in the privileged West to help those who live in dreadful poverty," says David.

"I'm a father of three wonderful daughters and I count myself incredibly lucky that I don't have to see them go hungry or cold. So the fact that every purchase of a CHOCAID product helps families who are in desperate need actually spurs me on to make the product as successful as possible."
