A pinch of chilli for Save the Children
A Cardiff mother of two has come up with a tasty way of raising money for Save the Children.
Thursday 1 February 2007
Nitya Pooviah of Rhiwbina was inspired by an article in the BBC's Good Food magazine on how to put together a charity cook book, the fruits of her labour, A Pinch of Chilli will be launched at Pentyrch Village Hall, near Cardiff.
"I have always been involved with charity work," says Nitya Pooviah, "even when I was growing up in India, and I thought a fund-raising book would be a worthwhile thing to do. We all tend to sit around thinking about doing things, but this time, I was determined to get it done. And the invaluable support of my friends enabled me to complete the project."
The thirty recipes in the book were collected from friends, and according to Nitya they are based on Indian food people actually cook in their own homes.
"These are not masalla and korma type recipes - they're really authentic. You can''t buy these kinds of mixes ready-made. However, we've tried to keep it as simple as possible, and all the ingredients are readily available in the UK. And we've tried to cut down a little on the chilli!"
All proceeds from the sale of A Pinch of Chilli will go towards the work of Save the Children.
"What appealed to me about Save the Children was that their work reaches out all over the world," said Nitya. "There are so many needy children in the world. We are so lucky to have what we have at home, and it makes you realise how many children are going without."
During the launch, recipes from the book will be served up, with entertainment from live band Bollywood Therapy. All tickets have been sold out, but copies of the book are on sale now for £10.
