The event, which will raise money for Save the Children, is being staged by Britain's largest transport provider, FirstGroup plc.

"We wanted to stage a unique sporting event in Scotland and raise money for Save the Children.

"I'm really hoping First Monster will inspire people to take on the challenge and raise money for those children in the UK who need our help the most" said Moir Lockhead, the chief executive of FirstGroup.

In teams of four, each competitor is required to complete two legs of the eight-leg event: one 20km cycle and one 10km run. To sign up for the First Monster Challenge or for more information, log on to www.firstmonster.co.uk.

FirstGroup plans to also run the 'First Mini Monster Challenge', a series of events which will take place throughout the UK in 2008, based on the original concept but targeted more at families, and staff. The local events will be much more accessible and the distances and terrain will be gentler so that tens of thousands of employees and passengers can compete, keep fit, try a new sport and also raise money for charity.

"Save the Children is pleased to be working with FirstGroup and to be involved with the First Monster event.  All the money raised from the event will be spent on Save the Children's work across the UK with some of the most vulnerable children to ensure they get the best start in life" said Tanya Steele, director of Supporter Care and Fundraising.
